Keeping Your Teen Safe This Prom Season

Prom is an exciting night in a teen’s life. Weeks are spent finding the right outfit, the right date, the right after party. As parents, we want our kids to enjoy themselves and make the best memories of high school, but we also want to be sure they are staying safe. It is our responsibility to push smart choices and discourage risky behaviors.

Before your teen heads out for prom, spend some time talking to them.

DISCUSS A PLAN FOR THE EVENING:

Make sure your teen is clear on your expectations of their curfew. Discuss what’s going on after the prom, how you can reach them, and more importantly, how they can reach you, at any time, for any reason, during the night.

Make sure your teen is prepared to deal with the pressures that they may encounter. Even a good teen can make a bad decision if they’re caught off guard and not ready to say “No” or walk away.

REMIND THEM OF SAFE DRIVING HABITS:

The long hours of activity for prom goers can lead to more dangerous driving conditions even if no alcohol or substances are involved. Remind your teens to wear their seat belts and not be distracted by:

  • Texting
  • Taking selfies
  • Too many passengers
  • Loud music
  • Speeding

KNOW THE LAW – UNDERAGE POSSESSION OR CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL CAN HAVE HEFTY CONSEQUENCES!
